Amazing Realistic Scorpion Cake by Astounding Cakes
How we did it
This amazing scorpion cake looks very impressive but is in actual fact on of the easiest 3D cakes we have made.
The Tail
The trickiest part of this cake was making the tail with the stinger.
the sting is made out of solid plastic icing and allowed to dry.
The tail section is made out of PVC piping which is bent to the correct shape and fixed directly on to the cake board.
the PVC pipe is then covered with strips of Fondant (plastic) icing starting at the bottom working up to the top where the sting is attached.
The Body
The entire body section is made out of chocolate cake, roughly cut into the basic shape of the scorpion body. This is placed on the cake board so that the rear section covers the base where the tail is fixed.
To cover the body in fondant (plastic) icing we cut the fondant into strips with various widths.
then starting at the rear they were layered with the rear side overlapping on top of the previous strip of fondant. this was repeated until the head was covered with one piece of fondant.
The bump and mouth parts are all formed with plastic icing.
The legs
To form the legs a fairly stiff wire is used, bent into the shape and size suitable to fit in with the size of the body. there are 4 legs on either side.
These are then covered with Fondant icing to create the leg shape.
It is best to pre-make these and let them dry before attaching so that they are sturdy.
Once dry they can be attached to the body
The Claws
The claws are made from solid Fondant icing hand shaped to suit the size of the body.
The Colors
All the Fondant used on the entire Scorpion was plain white.
once done we used an airbrush to create the realistic look on the scorpion using blacks and browns on the body and yellows and reds on the legs and tail.
We used an airbrush for the very realistic look, but the colors can also be painted on or colored fondant can be used but the end finish is just better with the airbrush
The Ground
Finally the cake is finished of with some crushed biscuits around the base.
And there you have it a very complicated looking cake which is relatively simple to create.
Of course the easiest way to have this astounding cake for your event would be to order one from us :)
